Grass Tree (Multi-Stem) - Xanthorrhoea johnsonii
A multi-headed Xanthorrhoea johnsonii represents a very long time. These plants add only a centimetre or two of trunk a year, so a branched specimen with several skirted heads has been growing since well before the house it will stand beside was built. That is the entire proposition: an irreplaceable, slow, unmistakably Australian object that no fast growing plant can imitate. Handle its roots gently and keep it dry, and it will outlive everything else in the garden.
Why the Grass Tree
Age and rarity: Multi-headed trunks take decades to form, so a specimen carries a presence money cannot shortcut.
Texture: The fine radiating skirt of stiff leaves throws remarkable shadows and moves in wind.
Drought hardiness: It is adapted to poor dry sandy soil and needs no summer irrigation once settled.
Flower spike: A tall cream spear of nectar rich flowers appears after fire or stress and draws native bees and birds.
Root sensitivity: It resents disturbance and is vulnerable to Phytophthora in wet soil, so drainage is everything.
Ideal Applications
Native feature planting: The centrepiece of a dry Australian garden of banksias, grevilleas and kangaroo paw.
Architectural courtyard: Its silhouette against render or stone is one of the strongest in Australian planting.
Gravel and rock gardens: Sharp drainage and reflected heat mirror its natural habitat.
Uplit night feature: A single spotlight through the skirt creates a dramatic shadow display.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m centres when grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding waterlogged winter soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil, low fertility, mounded above surrounding grade on clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first three months only, then taper to almost nothing, because more grass trees are killed by kindness than by drought. Never use phosphorus rich fertiliser, mulch with gravel or coarse sand rather than compost, and avoid digging or trenching anywhere near the root plate.
