Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Spineless Yucca (Multi-Stem) - Yucca elephantipes
Grown as a multi stem, this yucca gives you several trunks of differing height rising from one swollen base, each finished with a rosette of long strap shaped leaves, so the plant fills a vertical space at three or four levels instead of one. The key practical point is in the name: Yucca elephantipes has soft leaf tips, not spines, which is why it is the yucca specified beside pool fences, front paths and school entries where a Spanish bayonet would be a liability. It is drought hardy, takes light frost and tolerates long neglect.
Why Spineless Yucca
Soft Leaf Tips: The leaves end without a spine, so it can be used safely in high traffic and family areas.
Multiple Trunks: Staggered stem heights build a layered form that a single trunked plant cannot deliver.
Swollen Elephant Foot Base: The thickened base stores water and gives the plant its characteristic sculptural footing.
Tolerant of Neglect: It survives missed watering, poor soil and root restriction better than almost any other large feature plant.
Reshoots Willingly: Cut a trunk back and it branches from the cut, so height can be managed rather than lost.
Ideal Applications
Modern courtyard: The clean vertical form suits rendered walls, timber screens and minimal groundcover.
Poolside feature: Soft tips and negligible leaf drop make it one of the better choices around water.
Rooftop and planter boxes: Low water demand and tolerance of heat and wind suit exposed built environments.
Low water street frontage: It holds its appearance in a nature strip or front bed with no irrigation.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2m to 2.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of any reasonable type, from sand to improved clay, provided water never pools at the base. Raise the planting position slightly in heavy soils.
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first two months and then only during extended dry spells, as overwatering is the most common cause of failure. Keep mulch clear of the swollen base, and stake tall stems for the first season until the roots anchor against wind.
