Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Kara’s Stripes Foxtail Agave - Agave attenuata ‘Kara’s Stripes’
Foxtail agave is the soft one: no spines along the leaf margins and no rigid terminal spike, so it can be planted beside paths, pools and seating where a typical agave would be a hazard. ‘Kara's Stripes’ adds broad creamy yellow banding to the grey green leaves of Agave attenuata, which lifts the rosette out of a planting instead of letting it merge into the foliage behind. It forms a wide, symmetrical rosette on a short thickening stem.
Why Kara’s Stripes
Variegation: Soft grey green leaves striped and edged in cream to butter yellow, holding colour all year.
Safe to Handle: Spineless margins and a soft leaf tip, unlike almost every other agave in cultivation.
Sculptural Form: A symmetrical rosette of around 1.2m across that reads as architecture in a bed or a pot.
Clumping: Offsets form around the base over time and replace the parent rosette, which dies after its single flowering.
Water Thrift: Water stored in the leaves means it needs almost none from you once established.
Ideal Applications
Pot or urn feature: A single rosette in a wide bowl is a complete composition on its own.
Dry garden mass planting: Repeated through gravel with aloes, sedums and grasses.
Retaining wall top: Positioned above eye level the arching leaves are seen to best effect.
Poolside: The soft leaf tips make it one of the few agaves suitable near bare feet.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1-1.2m for a continuous mass planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5-2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn, avoiding cold wet soil in mid winter
Soil & Drainage: Very free draining sand, gravel or a raised succulent mix, as it rots quickly in heavy or wet soil
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly for the first three months to settle the roots, then only rarely. Avoid watering into the crown in humid weather, and give some afternoon shade in hot inland gardens because variegated leaves burn more readily than plain green ones.
Plant Details

Width: 1.2-1.5m per rosette
Growth Rate: Moderate
Foliage: Evergreen succulent
Light: Full sun on the coast, afternoon shade inland
Native to: Mexico
Flower Colour: Pale greenish yellow on a long arching spike, only on mature rosettes
