Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Butterfly Agave - Agave potatorum
Small, slow and close to perfectly symmetrical, this is the agave for people who want the form rather than the scale. Agave potatorum builds a compact rosette of powder blue grey leaves with distinctly scalloped, undulating margins edged in red brown teeth, each leaf tipped with a dark terminal spine. It stays under a metre across, which means it works in a pot, in a rockery or repeated through a gravel bed where a large agave would swamp everything.
Why Butterfly Agave
Compact Scale: Rarely exceeds 0.9m wide, so it suits small courtyards and containers where big agaves cannot go.
Leaf Margin Detail: Wavy scalloped edges with contrasting red brown teeth give the plant its character at close range.
Colour: A soft powder blue grey that pairs cleanly with rusted steel, limestone and pale gravel.
Symmetry: Leaves are held in a tight even rosette, which makes it read as a designed object rather than a plant.
Water Independence: Fully drought hardy once established, needing no irrigation in most Australian climates.
Ideal Applications
Pot Culture: A single rosette in a shallow bowl or terracotta pot as a courtyard feature.
Rockery Planting: Tucked between boulders where sharp drainage is guaranteed.
Repeated Accents: Planted at intervals along a gravel bed or path for rhythm at low level.
Roof And Balcony Gardens: Light, small and heat tolerant for exposed elevated positions.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a mass planted group
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m for individual accent plants
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Gritty free draining mix, mounded or raised on any soil that holds moisture, with gravel mulch rather than organic material
Establishment Care: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, and stop almost entirely through winter, since cold combined with wet is what kills this species rather than cold alone. Keep the crown free of fallen leaves and mulch, and note that it is monocarpic: after a decade or more it sends up a tall branched flower spike, then dies, so plan its replacement rather than treating it as permanent.
