Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Agave salmiana
This is one of the big architectural agaves and it needs to be treated as such. Agave salmiana forms a heavy rosette of thick grey green deeply channelled leaves that curve upward and back, each edged with dark hooked teeth and finished with a hard terminal spine that will go through a boot. It is genuinely tough, taking frost, drought, poor soil and reflected heat, and it makes a statement at a scale few succulents can reach.
Why Agave salmiana
Sheer scale: A mature rosette spans two to three metres, giving the presence of a shrub with the maintenance of a succulent.
Frost hardiness: It handles frost to roughly minus 6C in dry soil, which is unusual for an agave of this size.
Bud imprinting: Unfurling leaves leave the tooth impressions of their neighbours pressed into the surface, a detail worth close inspection.
Soil indifference: Poor, stony, alkaline or sandy ground all suit it, provided drainage is sharp.
Colony forming: Offsets appear around the base, so the planting renews itself after the parent flowers.
Ideal Applications
Dry garden anchor: One plant carries a large gravel bed that would otherwise need several shrubs.
Rural entrance: Robust enough for unirrigated driveway heads and gateposts.
Erosion prone slopes: A strong root system holds banks that are too dry for most planting.
Civic and median planting: Withstands heat, neglect and low water regimes in broad public beds.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy, gravelly or rocky soil; mound in clay and never plant in a low point that collects runoff
Establishment Care: Water monthly for the first warm season and then leave it alone, as established plants need no irrigation in most Australian climates. Site it at least 1.5m back from paths, driveways and play areas, because the terminal spine and marginal teeth are a genuine hazard at eye height.
