Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coral Aloe - Aloe striata
Coral aloe is the smooth one: broad, flat, blue grey leaves with no teeth at all, edged in a fine pink coral line that deepens as the plant takes more sun. Aloe striata forms a low stemless rosette rather than a trunk, and through winter it throws branched heads of coral orange flowers that are heavily worked by honeyeaters. It is chosen over spinier aloes and agaves where a sculptural succulent needs to sit beside a path or seat without being a hazard.
Why Coral Aloe
No spines: Smooth leaf margins make it safe next to paths, seating, pool surrounds and family areas.
Coral edging: A fine pink to coral leaf margin intensifies in full sun and gives colour even out of flower.
Winter bloom: Branched heads of coral orange flowers appear through winter into early spring, when little else is in colour.
Bird nectar: The flowers are a reliable winter nectar source for honeyeaters and native bees.
Very low water: Once rooted it survives on rainfall alone across most of southern Australia.
Ideal Applications
Waterwise garden bed: Repeated through gravel mulch with agaves, senecio and euphorbia for a dry garden composition.
Coastal front garden: Handles salt wind and sandy soil on exposed beachside blocks.
Path edging: Its spineless leaves make it one of the few large succulents suitable close to a walkway.
Rockery and slope: Excels on the sharp drainage of a rocky bank or embankment, where it also helps hold the surface.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.5 to 0.7m for a continuous groundcover mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.2m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, avoiding cold wet soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy, gravelly or rocky soil; it rots quickly in heavy clay or in beds that stay wet in winter
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly for the first three months only, then leave it to natural rainfall in all but severe drought. Mulch with gravel or scoria rather than organic mulch, which holds moisture against the base and encourages rot.
