Lacy Ground Fern - Dennstaedtia davallioides
Where most ferns present as a crown, Dennstaedtia davallioides presents as a drift. Individual triangular fronds, cut so finely they look almost translucent, rise one by one on wiry stems from a running underground rhizome, filling a shaded bed with a soft, airy layer about a metre deep. It is the fern that makes a rainforest planting look like it grew there rather than being installed.
Why Lacy Ground Fern
Frond Texture: Three times divided fronds give one of the finest textures available in an Australian shade plant.
Drifting Habit: Fronds emerge singly along a spreading rhizome rather than in tufts, so a planting reads as a natural stand.
Weed Suppression: Once the colony closes over, the shaded, rhizome filled soil leaves little room for weed seedlings.
Rainforest Provenance: An east coast native of wet forest and rainforest margins, so it sits correctly under lilly pilly, tree fern and native canopy.
Vigour in Shade: It fills space fast in low light, which few fine textured plants manage.
Ideal Applications
Under Canopy Mass Planting: Broad sweeps beneath established trees where nothing else will hold cover.
Rainforest Garden Floors: The soft middle layer between groundcovers and tall ferns in a subtropical or wet temperate scheme.
Shaded Bank Stabilisation: The spreading rhizome network binds loose soil on cool, shaded slopes.
Contained Courtyard Beds: Excellent in a raised or edged bed where the spread has a defined boundary.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a colony that closes over within two to three seasons
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m where a looser, more open drift is intended
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, into moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich, acidic and consistently moist; free draining but never allowed to bake dry
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers and keep a leaf litter or fine bark mulch over the rhizome zone. Be aware this fern spreads with real vigour in good conditions, so install an edge or root barrier if it sits against a bed you want to keep clear.
