Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Himalayan Weeping Bamboo - Drepanostachyum falcatum
Drepanostachyum falcatum is a tight clumping bamboo, not a runner, so it stays where it is planted and never needs a root barrier. The canes are slender and upright at the base then bend outward at the top under the weight of very fine foliage, giving a fountain shape that moves constantly in light air. It comes from cool, shaded Himalayan valleys, which explains why it looks so much better in a sheltered eastern courtyard than in open western sun.
Why Himalayan Weeping Bamboo
Clumping habit: The rhizomes are short and pachymorph, so the clump widens slowly and predictably rather than invading paving or lawn.
Fine texture: Leaves are narrow and densely set, closer to a large ornamental grass than the coarse look of a timber bamboo.
Weeping canopy: Arching cane tips create a soft overhead layer that suits narrow spaces where an upright bamboo feels rigid.
Shade performance: It is one of the better bamboos for a shaded side passage or a courtyard that gets only morning light.
Sound and movement: The light canes rustle in the smallest breeze, which is often the reason it is specified beside a seating area.
Ideal Applications
Courtyard screening: A row along a boundary fence gives height and privacy without the root spread of running species.
Poolside planting: Fine leaf litter and a contained clump make it a lower maintenance choice near water than broad-leaf screens.
Understorey layer: Planted beneath established trees it fills the shaded middle level where many screening plants fail.
Large containers: Restricted roots suit its clumping nature and keep the fountain habit tight and controlled.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn; avoid planting into peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive, humus rich, free draining soil. It will not tolerate drying out completely, nor will it sit in stagnant water.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently damp for the first full year, increasing frequency during hot dry spells rather than increasing volume in one hit. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or bark to hold moisture, and cut out any older or damaged canes at ground level in spring to keep the clump fresh.
