Euky Dwarf Yellow Gum - Eucalyptus leucoxylon ‘Euky Dwarf’
This is the small gum that made eucalypts usable again in suburban gardens. Selected from Eucalyptus leucoxylon for a compact, well behaved canopy, it tops out around the height of a two storey house instead of the twenty metres of its wild relatives, and it flowers heavily from a young age. Councils across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales plant it under powerlines for exactly the reasons a homeowner does: reliable size, smooth grey bark and honeyeaters all winter.
Why Euky Dwarf
Controlled mature size: It holds to a small tree scale, which makes it safe to plant within sight of a house or driveway.
Long flowering season: Pink to red blossom appears from autumn and can continue through to spring, peaking in the cooler months.
Bird value: The nectar draws honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees at a time of year when little else is in flower.
Bark and trunk: Smooth cream to grey bark sheds in patches, giving a clean pale trunk that lifts a dark planting scheme.
Toughness: It handles drought, moderate frost, alkaline soils and heavy clay far better than most ornamental small trees.
Ideal Applications
Suburban shade tree: One tree throws light dappled shade over a lawn or outdoor area without swamping the block.
Street and verge planting: The restrained canopy suits nature strips and locations with overhead services.
Native bird garden: Grouped with grevilleas and callistemons it extends the nectar supply through autumn and winter.
Rural driveway avenue: Evenly spaced along an entry it gives a formal native rhythm on dry, low input sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, spring in frost prone areas
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable across sand, loam and clay including alkaline ground, provided water does not pond around the trunk. Avoid rich compost and high phosphorus fertilisers.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers, then let it fend for itself. Mulch to a metre out from the trunk but keep the collar clear, and resist heavy staking so the trunk builds its own strength.
