Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bottlebrush Hakea - Hakea francisiana
Hakea francisiana carries dense cylindrical flower spikes of deep pink to red through winter and into spring, held tight against upright stems clothed in narrow blue grey leaves. It comes from the arid inland of Western Australia and South Australia, and everything about it, the leathery terete leaves, the woody seed pods and the deep root system, is built for heat and low rainfall. Honeyeaters work the spikes constantly while it is in flower.
Why Bottlebrush Hakea
Winter Flowering: Peaks in the cooler months when few natives are doing anything.
Bird Attraction: Heavy nectar production brings in honeyeaters and wattlebirds daily.
Upright Habit: Grows tall and narrow, so it screens without taking much ground.
Drought Hardiness: Once established it survives on rainfall alone in dry districts.
Foliage Colour: Fine blue grey leaves give texture and colour contrast year round.
Ideal Applications
Dry Climate Screen: Planted in a row it gives an informal boundary in low rainfall gardens.
Native Bird Garden: Pairs with grevilleas and banksias to extend the nectar season.
Rural Windbreak: Tough enough for exposed inland property boundaries.
Gravel Garden Feature: A strong vertical element among low, spreading dry country plants.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in dry climate zones, spring where winters are cold
Soil & Drainage: Deep sandy or gravelly soil with very sharp drainage, low humidity and no phosphorus rich fertiliser, which will kill it
Establishment Care: Water lightly every week or two through the first summer only, then leave it dry. Use a gravel or coarse bark mulch, tip prune after flowering to keep it dense, and avoid overhead watering in humid districts.
