Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Grass Leaf Hakea - Hakea multilineata
Hakea multilineata is a Western Australian shrub to small tree with long, flat, strap-like leaves marked with many parallel veins, which is where the botanical name comes from. Through winter and into spring it produces dense pink to deep pink flower spikes packed along the older stems inside the canopy, feeding honeyeaters at a lean time of year. It is grown where a tough, upright, narrow native is wanted in a dry Mediterranean climate garden, and it will not thrive in humid summer rainfall districts.
Why Grass Leaf Hakea
Winter flowering: Bright pink spikes crowd the stems from late autumn through winter into spring, well outside the usual flowering season.
Distinctive foliage: Long, flat, finely veined leaves give an unusual grassy texture uncommon in shrubs of this size.
Narrow upright habit: Grows tall relative to its width, which suits tight beds and narrow side gardens.
Genuine drought hardiness: Native to the dry inland wheatbelt of Western Australia and needs no summer water once established.
Bird attracting: Nectar-rich flowers held on the inner stems are heavily worked by honeyeaters.
Ideal Applications
Dry climate native garden: A backbone shrub in Western Australian, South Australian and inland Victorian gardens.
Windbreak and shelter row: Planted in staggered lines on exposed rural blocks with sandy soil.
Bird habitat planting: Combined with banksias and grevilleas to give a continuous nectar supply across the seasons.
Gravel and rockery beds: Set into unirrigated gravel gardens where the drainage is naturally sharp.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in Mediterranean climates so roots establish over the wet season
Soil & Drainage: Demands sharp drainage in sandy, gravelly or lateritic soil. It is phosphorus sensitive, so use only low phosphorus native fertiliser and never plant it in heavy clay or a site that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first summer only, then stop supplementary watering entirely in suitable climates. Mulch with coarse gravel or chunky bark to 75mm held clear of the stem, and tip prune lightly after flowering to keep the plant furnished rather than bare-legged.
