Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Heliconia bihai ’Hong Kong Claw’
’Hong Kong Claw’ is a claw-form Heliconia bihai with an upright inflorescence of firm, outward-curving bracts in strong red with contrasting yellow to green keels. The clump is vigorous and multi-caned, with the broad glossy paddle leaves that make heliconias so useful for building tropical mass quickly. In frost-free Australian gardens it is planted where both a screening effect and a genuine flowering display are needed from the same plant.
Why ’Hong Kong Claw’
Crisp colour contrast: The red bracts and pale keels give a sharply defined pattern that holds up in bright sun.
Reliable flowering: One of the more free-flowering claw types in warm humid gardens.
Dense caning: Produces new canes readily, so the clump thickens rather than becoming open at the base.
Wind resilience within shelter: The stiff canes hold the inflorescence upright better than the pendent heliconias.
Vase performance: Cut stems last well, a practical bonus for anyone who picks from the garden.
Ideal Applications
Boundary screening in the tropics: Fast-forming green mass that flowers along its length.
Pool and outdoor living surrounds: Provides the resort look with a long flowering season.
Understorey to palms: Fills the space beneath tall palms where bare trunks leave a visual gap.
Feature planting near entries: Bold enough to carry an entry courtyard on its own.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Late spring to summer, into warm moist soil
Soil & Drainage: Organic-rich, moisture-retentive soil that still drains freely
Establishment Care: Water daily in hot dry spells over the first season and keep the rhizome zone permanently damp thereafter. Mulch heavily, feed with a high potassium fertiliser through the growing season to support flowering, and remove finished canes at ground level.
