Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Heliconia ’Black Cherry’
‘Black Cherry’ is one of the large erect heliconias, sending up upright inflorescences of deep wine red bracts from a banana-like clump of broad paddle leaves. Heliconia ‘Black Cherry’ wants warmth, humidity and shelter, and given those three things it flowers right through the warm months and cuts superbly for indoor arrangements. In cooler subtropical gardens it needs a protected pocket with overhead canopy rather than an open bed.
Why Black Cherry Heliconia
Wine Red Bracts: The colour is unusually dark for a heliconia and holds well against green foliage or a pale wall.
Erect Inflorescence: Flowers stand upright above the foliage rather than hanging, so they read clearly from a distance.
Cut Flower Life: Stems last well over a week in a vase and are a staple of tropical florist work.
Bold Leaf Mass: Even out of flower the paddle foliage gives strong tropical structure.
Clumping Habit: Spreads slowly from a central rhizome mass rather than running through a bed.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Understorey: Sits beneath palms and larger trees where filtered light and shelter are natural.
Cut Flower Bed: Worth a dedicated row in a warm garden purely for picking.
Poolside Mass: Provides height and colour around pool surrounds in tropical and subtropical gardens.
Screening Infill: Fills the middle layer between ground covers and canopy along a fence line.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, or at the start of the wet season in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, free-draining soil with heavy organic content and consistent moisture. It will not tolerate frost or cold, waterlogged winter soil
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first warm season and feed regularly, as heliconias are hungry and moisture responsive. Mulch heavily with composted material and give it wind shelter, since exposed leaves shred and the display is lost.
