Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Willow Bottlebrush - Melaleuca salicina
Melaleuca salicina, still widely sold under its former name Callistemon salignus, is the bottlebrush that behaves like a proper tree. It builds a real trunk with soft papery white bark, carries narrow willow like foliage, and flushes bright pink new growth through the canopy in spring before the cream bottlebrush flowers open. It also copes with periodic waterlogging, which puts it on the short list for low lying and clay sites where most street trees fail.
Why Willow Bottlebrush
Papery White Bark: The pale flaking trunk is a feature in its own right and lifts a planting through winter.
Pink New Growth: Spring flushes emerge bright pink to bronze across the whole canopy, giving a second display before flowering.
Wet Feet Tolerance: It survives seasonal inundation and heavy clay that would kill most trees of comparable size.
Bird Nectar: Honeyeaters and lorikeets work the cream brushes heavily through spring.
Speed: Fast establishment means a usable screen within about three years from planting.
Ideal Applications
Street and verge tree: Modest height, tolerant roots and native credentials make it a standard council choice on the east coast.
Fast boundary screen: Planted in a line and tip pruned it closes a sight line quickly.
Wet and low lying ground: Ideal for swales, drainage lines and the damp corner of a block.
Rural shelter belt: Used in mixed windbreak rows for stock shade and wind filtering.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring in temperate districts; any time but midsummer in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Extremely adaptable, from coastal sand to heavy clay, tolerating seasonal inundation and mild salinity; neutral to slightly acid is preferred
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer and then leave it to fend for itself in all but severe drought. Remove lower limbs progressively across the first three years if a clear trunk is wanted, and tip prune straight after flowering to keep the crown dense rather than open and twiggy.
