Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Myrtillocactus cochal
Myrtillocactus cochal is a tree forming cactus from the Baja California peninsula, branching low from a short woody trunk into a candelabra of blue green ribbed stems. It is used in dry landscape design for structure: a hard vertical mass that reads in silhouette against a wall and asks for nothing once it is in the ground. Growth is slow, so the plant you install is close to the plant you keep for years.
Why Cochal
Candelabra Structure: Branching starts low and repeats, building a dense multi armed form rather than a single column.
Blue Green Stems: The waxy bloom on the ribbed stems gives a cool blue cast that contrasts well with warm gravel and rendered walls.
Water Independence: Established plants need no irrigation at all in most Australian climates and actively suffer from it.
Frost Limit: It is damaged below about zero and needs a warm, dry, protected position; it is not a plant for cold tablelands or wet winters.
Slow Growth: Because it develops slowly, a mature specimen holds its designed proportions in a courtyard for a long time.
Ideal Applications
Gravel and desert style gardens: It provides the tall element among agaves, aloes and low succulents.
Architectural courtyard feature: Set against a plain rendered wall the silhouette becomes the focal point.
Raised planters: Elevation guarantees the sharp drainage it needs and lifts the form to eye level.
Warm terrace and rooftop planting: Its low water demand and light root mass suit constructed planters in frost free positions.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Massed at 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m clear
Best Planting Season: Late spring and summer, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Extremely free draining coarse sand and gravel with minimal organic matter; mound or raise the bed in higher rainfall areas, as it rots in wet winter soil
Establishment Care: Water once a fortnight through the first warm season and not at all over winter. Support taller specimens with a padded stake for the first year until the root plate anchors, and keep mulch and soil clear of the base of the stems.
