Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Screw Pine - Pandanus cookii
Screw pines get their name from the spiral arrangement of their long strap leaves, which wind around the stem in three ranks and read as a green spiral from directly above. Pandanus cookii is a tropical screw pine grown for that architectural rosette and for the stilt-like prop roots that gradually lift the base of the trunk clear of the ground. It brings an unmistakable coastal-tropical character that no palm quite replicates, on a plant that stays modest enough for a garden bed.
Why Screw Pine
Spiral Habit: Leaves arranged in a tight helix give the plant a geometry that photographs and lights extremely well.
Prop Roots: Aerial roots descend from the lower trunk and become a distinctive feature in their own right.
Wind and Salt: The genus is built for exposed tropical coasts and shrugs off salt-laden onshore wind.
Sandy Soil Tolerance: It establishes in poor, sandy, free-draining ground where richer feeders struggle.
Spiny Margins: Leaf edges and midribs carry small sharp teeth, so keep it back from paths, seating and pool edges.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Tropical Gardens: The defining plant of a beachside planting in northern Australia.
Resort and Poolside Beds: Strong silhouette with low litter compared with most tropical trees.
Courtyard Sculpture: A single specimen gives structure to a small enclosed space year round.
Large Containers: Grows well in a substantial pot in a warm, bright, sheltered position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2-2.5m when grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Start of the wet season, or late spring to summer in the subtropics
Soil & Drainage: Sandy to loamy and free draining. It tolerates poor coastal sand well and does not need high fertility, but it will not accept cold, heavy, waterlogged ground.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first warm season, then reduce to occasional deep soaks once the prop roots engage the soil. Mulch with coarse organic material kept clear of the trunk, and protect young plants from any frost, which they will not survive.
