Overview & Specifications

Kumoi Nishiki Siebold Maple - Acer sieboldianum ‘Kumoi Nishiki’
Acer sieboldianum is the quieter cousin of the full moon maple, with softly downy, rounded, many-lobed leaves and a slow, refined habit. 'Kumoi Nishiki' is a variegated selection, its leaves flecked and splashed with cream and white over the green ground colour, which lightens the whole canopy and makes the tree read as a pale presence in a shaded bed. Variegated maples are slower and more sun-sensitive than their green parents, so this one asks for a sheltered spot and rewards it.
Why Kumoi Nishiki Siebold Maple
Cream variegation: Leaves carry irregular cream and white flecking that varies leaf to leaf, giving a dappled canopy.
Rounded lobed leaves: Softly downy, many-lobed leaves are rounder and gentler in outline than a typical Japanese maple.
Slow refined growth: Stays small for many years, making it manageable in a courtyard or small garden.
Light in shade: The pale foliage brightens shaded beds where green-leaved maples disappear.
Autumn tones: Colours through yellow and orange in cool districts before leaf fall.
Ideal Applications
Shaded courtyard feature: Its pale canopy lifts an enclosed space that gets no direct afternoon sun.
Collector and specimen beds: A genuinely uncommon maple worth siting where it can be examined closely.
Woodland understorey: Grows well beneath a high deciduous canopy in cool districts.
Feature containers: Suits a large glazed pot in a protected, part-shaded position.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening tree; 2.5m if grouped
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or very early spring
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus-rich, slightly acid, free-draining soil; keep the root zone cool
Establishment Care: Water consistently through the first three summers, since the pale variegated tissue burns far sooner than green foliage when the plant is short of water. Site the tree in morning sun or dappled light only, mulch heavily, and shelter it from hot dry wind.
