Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Glossy Acronychia - Acronychia laevis
Under an established canopy most screening natives thin out and go leggy at the base. Acronychia laevis does the opposite: it is a true rainforest understorey tree, so filtered light suits it, and it holds dense, high gloss foliage right down the trunk. That combination makes it the practical answer for narrow shaded side boundaries and courtyards where a lilly pilly sulks.
Why Glossy Acronychia
Shade Tolerance: Grows and stays furnished in filtered light or a few hours of morning sun, where most screening shrubs bare off low down.
Leaf Quality: Leaves are thick, deeply glossy and faintly aromatic when crushed, reading almost as polished as a camellia.
Bird Habitat: Small cream flowers are followed by soft pale pink to white fruit that fruit pigeons and bowerbirds strip quickly.
Manageable Scale: It settles at small tree size in a garden rather than pushing into eaves, powerlines or footings.
Coastal Origin: It occurs naturally in littoral rainforest, so it copes with humid, salt laden air behind the front dune line.
Ideal Applications
Shaded side boundary screen: Planted in a row it closes a narrow south facing gap where light is limited all year.
Rainforest understorey layer: Sits beneath taller figs, tuckeroos or brush box to build a genuine two tier planting.
Courtyard specimen: A single plant with the lower limbs lifted gives structure and gloss in a small paved space.
Habitat and revegetation work: Useful in coastal restoration plantings where fruiting native trees are wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn in subtropical zones; spring in cooler coastal districts
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus rich and free draining; tolerates improved clay but not standing water
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, tapering to weekly once new growth extends. Hold a 75mm layer of leaf litter or bark mulch clear of the trunk, and wait until the first flush hardens before feeding.
