Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lance Water Fern - Blechnum chambersii
A small, strictly shade dwelling fern from the wet gullies of south eastern Australia, Blechnum chambersii forms a tight rosette of simple, dark green, ladder-like fronds that arch out low and flat. It is the ground level detail plant in a fern gully scheme, chosen over larger tree ferns and ground ferns precisely because it stays small, keeps its shape and never colonises beyond its crown.
Why Lance Water Fern
Two Frond Types: Broad sterile fronds arch outward at ground level while narrower fertile fronds stand erect through the centre, giving the crown real structure.
Contained Crown: It grows from a single short rhizome rather than running, so it holds a defined position in a planting scheme for years.
Deep Shade Tolerance: It performs in the low light beneath established canopy where flowering understorey plants fail.
Local Provenance: An indigenous fern of cool wet forest in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, so it sits correctly in native gully restoration work.
Moisture Signature: Glossy, dark, slightly leathery fronds give a wet forest character that dry-tolerant ferns cannot imitate.
Ideal Applications
Fern Gully Groundwork: Massed at the base of tree ferns and rainforest shrubs, it closes the gap between trunk and soil.
Shaded Courtyard Beds: A drift along a south facing wall or beneath a deck holds green through the year in positions that get almost no direct sun.
Water Feature Margins: Planted just above the splash line of a pond or rill, where humidity is constant and light is filtered.
Native Understorey Restoration: Suited to replanting shaded creek lines and gully floors in cool temperate districts.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.4 to 0.5m for a continuous groundcover drift
Spacing (feature/avenue): 0.6 to 0.8m where each crown is to be read individually
Best Planting Season: Autumn through early spring, when soil moisture is reliable and evaporation is low
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus rich, acidic soil that stays consistently damp but drains freely; heavy clay must be improved with composted organic matter
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist for the first full year and never let it dry out completely, as this fern does not recover well from wilting. Mulch with leaf litter or fine composted bark rather than coarse chip, and shelter new plantings from hot dry wind.
