Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Yellow Beehive Ginger - Zingiber spectabile
The inflorescences of Zingiber spectabile push up on their own short stems from the base of the clump, forming stacked waxy bracts that genuinely look like a beehive, opening yellow and deepening to orange and red as they age. The leafy canes behind them are upright and tropical, giving a solid green backdrop. It is grown for those long lasting bracts, which hold for weeks in the garden and are widely used as cut flowers.
Why Yellow Beehive Ginger
Beehive Bracts: Tiered cone shaped inflorescences up to 30cm tall are the main event, not the small true flowers.
Long Lasting Display: Individual bracts persist for many weeks and change colour as they mature.
Cut Flower Value: Stems hold extremely well in a vase, making the clump genuinely productive.
Shade Performance: Flowers reliably in filtered light where most flowering plants will not.
Clumping Growth: Spreads steadily by rhizome to fill a bed without becoming aggressive.
Ideal Applications
Tropical Understorey: Planted beneath palms and large leaved trees in a subtropical garden.
Shaded Courtyard Bed: Brings genuine flower colour to a warm shaded space in Queensland and northern NSW.
Cutting Garden: Grown in a working bed for a regular supply of long stemmed tropical flowers.
Poolside Massing: Provides lush foliage and colour in a sheltered warm position near water.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer as the soil warms
Soil & Drainage: Rich moist well drained soil high in organic matter, slightly acid to neutral
Establishment Care: Keep the soil consistently moist through the warm months, watering two or three times a week in summer. Mulch heavily with compost, feed monthly in the growing season, and expect the clump to slow or die back in winter in cooler subtropical areas, resprouting once warmth returns.
